Happy Birthday to you! Figuring out birthday gifts for yourself can be a struggle, but, sometimes it’s not always about material objects.
Today is my birthday.
(ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧ ✧゚・: *ヽ(◕ヮ◕ヽ)
I turned the big 3-0 today.
And while that may seem like a daunting, terrifying number for some, it’s nothing that I care about. The only thing I do care about is making sure that my day is about me and that I take care of myself on the day my mom pushed me out into this world.
It’s a cause for celebration, not for being sad that my 20s are gone.
There are a lot of things I wanted to accomplish by the time I was 30, but, since it’s already here, I can’t do diddly-squat about it. So, I figured it would be a good idea to talk about some birthday gifts that I have given myself in the past and what I will continue to give to myself (and what I suggest for you, too).
Grab some tea and stay awhile because sometimes the best birthday present is the one you gift yourself.
Table of Adventures
Sentimental Best Gifts from You to You
Because sometimes you want to go above and beyond for yourself.
- Throwing yourself a party and inviting close friends and family members. It’s the excuse you needed to get most of your favorite people under one roof.
- There is no better time than tuning out the entire world and treating yourself to a spa day. Whether DIY or done by a professional, pamper yourself!
- Buy yourself that item that you have been staring at for months. There’s no better time than the present!
- Take a trip! For my milestone birthday this year, I’m dragging my boyfriend to Mexico. The plan was originally Belize, but, because of restrictions, we had to make a major detour. That’s OK because it’ll be our first time in Mexico! Excited.
- Send yourself flowers. You’re the best judge of what you love in floral arrangements. I prefer peonies if you must know.
My Favorite Things
My favorite movie in the entire world (I kid you not) is The Sound of Music. I don’t watch it as much as I should and I should know the entire movie line by line, but with my chicken brain, that’s never going to happen.
Therefore, I wanted to dedicate this section to the best gift ideas I ever gave myself.
- I really love candy, too much in fact. Usually on my birthday I buy myself a big bag of Sour Patch Kids and munch on them until they’re done. Whether that be the same day, the next week, or a month, I get it done.
- I’ve taken myself to see a movie all by myself. It’s so nice not having to wrangle other people to see a movie you really want to see.
- Once I took a little road trip to experience the beautiful scenery and walk up to a waterfall. It was the best.
- I enjoy taking baths but they were pretty bare-bones with a bubble bath or if I felt like a razzle-dazzle, some bath bombs. So, I bought myself one of those bathtub caddy trays so I could have wine, read a book, or watch a show. It elevated my personal spa time.
- Other spa gifts I have given myself are plush slippers and silk pajamas! Luxury.
- I volunteered at a pet shelter once. The dogs were the best part obviously.
The Best Birthday Gift
Some of the best gift ideas are the most simple (or not, lol). Even if someone else isn’t willing to do anything for you doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do a little something for yourself. Forget everyone else and indulge in me-time.
- Make yourself a cup of tea. Relax with a cup and watch nature wake up in the morning.
- Have a solo picnic and people watch. Build yourself a little charcuterie board and have a smattering of delicious foods that make you, and only you, thrilled to still be alive.
- Go to a park. Spend time there, listen to some soft music, and read a book.
- Take yourself on a coffee date. Just you and that cup of coffee and the sights of the city.
- Do some therapeutic shopping. Window shopping, going to an outlet, having fun doing what will make you happy.
- Give yourself a foot peel mask. Pamper your feet and in a few days reveal beautiful feet.
- Have you ever thought about cashmere beanies? No? Well now you have. It’s an investment, but they’re oh-so warm for those wintry months.
- Buy yourself an electric wine opener and pop the cork on that wonderfully delightful vintage. If you can find a wine made in your year (or at least decade), that will make it so much more special.
- Buy yourself an essential oil diffuser. This may not seem like much, but, in essence, it can go a long way after your birthday. If you know nothing about essential oils, that’s OK it doesn’t even matter. Having an essential oil diffuser as a birthday gift is more of an excuse to give yourself one more thing that can get your house smelling delicious in no time.
- See the sunrise or sunset. Doing this by yourself, in your own company, can be beautiful. Head to the beach, to the top of a local mountain, and revel in the earth around you waking up and going to bed.
Birthday Rituals
One of the nicer things about celebrating your birthday is that you can come up with birthday rituals that really speak to who you are.
There are many rituals that have been done since you were a child that you may love and some that you started when you were living on your own. But no matter the case, you can always start a new ritual, too.
- Breakfast in Bed. This one is fun and easy because someone else can do it for you or you can treat yourself.
- Bake something for yourself. A lot of the time I will bake myself my own cake and attempt to decorate it (horribly), but showing myself the appreciation I deserve makes it worth it.
- Indulge in something you love. Sometimes I lounge in the living room and veg out watching my favorite show for a little bit.
- Start the tradition of cooking something new on your birthday. Entice your taste buds in savoring something it’s never had before. You’re one year older and you shouldn’t let any fears keep you back.
- Explore somewhere new. This can be somewhere locally or abroad. Whatever you do, have fun doing it.
Holiday Season Birthdays
I don’t know from personal experience how it must feel to have a birthday during a holiday season. I have heard from friends that it can be irritating when others don’t separate their birthday from the holidays though. And I’m sure that it is frustrating to share a birthday with a major holiday like Christmas.
But guess what? It’s your birthday and you can do what you want to.
During this time it’s the perfect way to show others how you want them to shower you on your special day.
- Do something that you’ve always wanted to do for your birthday. This can be easier said than done, but if your birthday is in the winter (sorry) how about taking a weekend road trip and jetting down the coast to a warm beach? Sip on those margaritas in the hot sun for once.
- On the flip side, if your birthday is in the summer, but you’re more of a winter person (why?) then how about taking a solo trip to the opposite hemisphere where it’s more likely to be cold. Then you can go skiing or go on a winter cable ride with hot cocoa and beautiful views.
- If you can’t dig any of that, try doing something at the 6 month mark. This can be easier for trips going to Disney World with friends (if you catch my drift).
- Engage in your mental health during the holidays. That may be something you wanted to do anyway. We don’t want negative energy around these parts!
- Of course, if your birthday is at Christmas time, maybe the perfect stocking stuffer is a beautiful necklace or “surprising” yourself with something sumptuously expensive.
Conclusion to Birthday Gifts for Yourself (and Just You!)
Your birthday only comes around once a year so don’t wait for someone else to make you happy on that day. Indulge, be extravagant, explore, have the time of your life. Whether you take a goddess bath or get involved in a roaring match of soccer life the day up. It is after all another year you’re here.
Have fun on your special day, oh, and Happy Birthday!
